The URL returned on the 5th of last Saturday with a sparring exhibition concept rollout that turned out a mixed result of takeaways worthy of examination.
Letβs explore!
13 single round bouts opening up a 26 man slot to extend the URL roster to an early 1st quarter introduction of both potential future matchups as well as strategies for each battler to disclose a bit of insight into their approach this SZN.

A couple game tape notes:
Geechi Gotti-
The Champ arrived. Letβs go ahead and get this out of the way. Whatever Mike P did to provoke the tide- he shouldnβt have. Leave it to Geechi Gotti to turn a tool sharpening tune up spar session into a Michael massacre. The Geechi Gotti wrath is of the stark terror variety Mike P should have come to expect when you think about it in retrospect. Mike Pβs consistent criticisms of Geechiβs overall game and approach to the profession as a peer had to contribute to the vitriol spewed by a Gotti with a point to make. Michael Jordan made the weary pay for less. Often with exaggerated and/or flat out made up sh*t. Geechi demonstrated here how to take a slight and make slight work of an opponent devoid of equal footing. Not to mention the art of Geechiβs simplistic appeal is the skill itself. Most of the NBA shoots threes at a high percentage clip. But no one does the fundamental aim and release motion of shooting threes like Stephen Curry does. Mike P understood this however may still be in denial about the acceptance of it. Like guards whoβve come to understand you begin guarding Steph the moment he crosses half-court, like it or not. The same for Geechi Gotti. Like it or not Mike P needed to deflect the gravity of Geechiβs ability to swing the venues momentum with more strategy than battling straight up. You donβt guard Steph straight up. And you donβt allow Geechi Gotti the floor knowing you have no interest in addressing the elephant in the room, cause he isβ¦ As a result, the other side of the coin was in effect here unbeknownst to Mike as he elected to null & void his own round by giving Geechi the airspace and room to introduce himself to 2022 with 35 foot haymaker bombs. Caffeine studios on this nite mustβve felt like the Oracle in Oakland. Chef Gotti.
Geechi came down from the mountain to exchange lyrical hands. You knew someone was in trouble when the face showed face. About-Face salute. π₯Ά
PenGod- βliterally, stick sh*t up for a living like thumbtacksβ
P.ess- Geechi Gottiβs mid-round rebuttal (in reality a written tailored to bait) after insinuating Mike P lost to Ryda knowing heβd respond is yet another crafty demonstration of Geechiβs growing attention to detail while in prime form. π
Mike P-
After reviewing the round, Mike did little within his core material to combat what he endured reading the room as the bottom of the round. With obvious rebuttal territory on hand with a lot of room to work with, it became rather surprising as Mikeβs round concluded that he did virtually nothing to offset the repeated headshot steady punch tactic of Gotti. Mike took punishment and refused to throw the counter right/write to even attempt to even the score. Thus, a one round dismantling TKO ensued despite Mike throwing the jab all round; he never stepped forward and pivoted out from the ropes. This was his demise. Addressing the points he had for Geechi, some of which are worth noting and expounding on, without bringing the round full-circle and at-least piercing the punch of Geechiβs flaws as his target for land is what ultimately doomed Mike. For the record on points, I had a tally of 48-22 =Geechi Gotti TKO.
Tough loss for Mike P though the manβs family is no oneβs business past the ring.
PenGod- βpull up on, Pronto/plain black tee with the buffs from Johnny Bravoβ
π
Kyd Slade-
Kyd Slade certainly possesses the star potential many have anointed him with. His ability to lull his opponent into a lyrical deathtrap with a calming tone of harsh assurance reminds me of a well timed counter puncher. Slade kept it brief here but also gave enough of a sample size into his repertoire to warrant demand. It will be quite revealing what the business sees for his brand as his 2022 sophomore SZN develops. If the URL is anything like boxing promotions Kyd Slade is a future prize fighter they will slow play the build-up for as a future anchor of the rosterβs segue into a new era of headliners. I expect to see Slade in calculation.

Bad Newz-
Newz speaks with a conviction and direct to the point rhyme flow I think the environment believes so much it actually cancels out some out the ambience in the room. His body of work here, solid and gritty. Clean jabs. Stick and move. He learned from one of the best as you can see glimpses of Roc in his stance like a Tank Davis fight you blink right and you can see a little Floyd. Bad Newz has a simple and effective style tailored for playback. Not much for kerfuffle. Work.
PenGod- βif this internet gangsta/tell me itβs on-site/then iβm up-loading/chrome toniteβ
π
Ryda-
Ryda alluded to the fan vote early in his round and iβm interested to know what he meant by it considering their were no pre-polls for this bout. Was he insinuating heβd already lost the vote before the bout even began? Ryda has a style that works and gives him identity and yet always seems to deviate away from it. Yes it is true styles make fights and one should adjust but I canβt help but wonder why Ryda wouldnβt double down on the silk bearing charm of a dangerous P aesthetic that would assuredly gain him a particular core fanatic base to lean on as a foundation. Especially considering Ryda also makes dope music outside of the ring. For my 2cents I just think Ryda may be missing out on a significant appeal to his own draw by refusing to commit to the alter ego. Go full on Shawn Michaels/Ric Flair. And still talk your talk artistically while absorbing the characterβs brand perks.

Shotgun Suge-
Suge get right to it donβt he? Lol
No space to waste Shotgun Suge the Legend still mixing it up in 2022. Dope. A simple spar is right in the wheelhouse of what Suge does best and here it showed. Suge is noticeably speeding up his cadences and itβd be interesting to know why heβs doing it. Compact material? Style points? Clean jabs? Whatever the case, as Suge makes his adjustments to fit the mold and transition Eras I think there are avenues for success paved for Suge to continue catching wreck in this sport and that is good for all of us. If Melo can still get a bucket Suge can too. Vets matter. And this spar showed why as Suge had a great round of material. Simple, fierce, effective, repetitive, and to the body. Wear down the opponent heavyweight style. I also think (and I could be wrong) the perception driven from some media does not reflect the artists peers. In his peers mind Suge is a signature fight in this sport despite the way it may be painted elsewhere. And when Suge has the lyrical stamina to throw consistent body blows his opponent is in for a long night. As was the case here though the point deduction would have cost him on the tally if sanctioned, he outpoints but drops the Round. Get it? A solid lyrical showcase from Suge here. Real Sikh? Bully fight. Any way around taking Suge for Sikh?

Fonz-
Looking forward to seeing what Fonz has in store for 2022. A true spar for him in this one. He fought through it and landed some nice straight punches and displayed his heavy handed talent. Fonz at full speed can TKO a bout and take the roof off of his opponent. Here he showed what punchers do. Flips=chips. Canβt have just one. The stack and swing approach of Fonz will bode well for him.
PenGod- βDrugz was in his bag like a stoned burger/but Fonz was cookingβ
βοΈ
Drugz-
Much respect to Drugz for his resurgence into the sport and his art craft. The confidence of Drugz delivery is very noticeable as is his growing awareness to engage different levels of octave dependent on the material. Also, the comedic relief in segue to his elongated jabs has shown really impressive lately. Cleaning up around the edges of his punch count. Respect to Drugz working on his game even as a vet with a lot of fights already. Heβs currently experiencing a great start to 2022 as he declared this to be his year. Hard to argue against it thus far.

π
Big T-
Big T is a style archetype of his own. A 1/1 style impossible to duplicate. But also hit or miss at this point in his legendary career. Thus, the temptation to land Big Tuna on a card for one of his iconic rounds of creativity is the lure that got him here on this nite IMO. Though treating a URL 1-rounder exhibition like other venues respectfully probably isnβt ideal if the goal is to be present there more often in 2022. Big T gave a lot of moments to Smack Whiteβs institute so in that way who are we to say anything but hey- this particular day wasnβt Big Tβs day. Heβs seen brighter outcomes and maybe he has a few iconic rounds left to give. Would love to see it from one of the most innovative performers of all-time.
PenGod- βI will Idi Amin/Aminβ
π
Ace Amin-
Ace donβt play with nobody. His stern approach to the ring I think could be credited to his craft just as much as his notable background. Not to mention Ace Amin can be counted on to have something to say. Amidst the performance touch can be found gems for wisdom or gems to keep and take home at times and that quality makes Ace a very interesting draw for my 2cents. The battle of attrition style of trading war wound tales with other war hounds gives off a serious tone to the lyrical fight that isnβt always available even when similar content is presented from other artist. I think they characterize this aesthetic to believability. More than that though I think is that Ace Amin holds a certain awareness through culpability in real-time that heβs found to be translatable to his lyrical fight style and through that we are able to hear real life submerged into a balanced blend of entertainment and lesson. Ace Aminβs arc within the URL Universe will be fascinating considering his style is so necessary but he may not ever be crowned a peopleβs champ as much as his raw introduction to the sportβs scene provided him early on (would love to be wrong about this in retrospect). This may prove unfair to a degree when upon further examination what shows glaringly is that Ace actually embodies many of the qualities youβd typically like to see from a battler: sell the fight, excite the hype, mic a story, and style point. Check check & check. Ace brings the tool-bag required for a seat at the table. Whether such is the path chosen for him is what remains to be seen when factoring pure skill. Odds are heβll become a storied vet and have a long career just off of talent alone but which career is it- KG or Tim Duncan? Trick question, either outcome would be lauded.

Holmzie Da God-
Holmzie has looked sharp in his last two URL outings. Noted. Here Holmzie operated from a safe zone of a style clash perfectly suited for his strengths. And he did not disappoint taking full advantage of the opportunity at hand. Da God stepped forward and let his lyrical hands go and that bodes well for a 3 round decision in his favor should it materialize. Betting odds probably wouldnβt land in his favor but Holmzie matches up well in these fights. Good to see em working.

Loso-
Add Loso to the list of strategist who pulled punches for a spar that should inevitably become a sanctioned 3 rounds? Perhaps but more likely considering the solid material given I think Loso found on the other side of a strong round from his opponent where he can find success up against Holmzie at his best. And in exhibition mode I would say taking away those insights for use later would be a win in itself. Technically, I didnβt have a wide point-margin differential between the two though Loso and the cosmetics of his brand will always leave room open for strong counter punches to the chin considering the plethora of room to work with for his opposition both in preparation and real time. That said, Loso has always seemed to manage fine despite it and navigate the areas of his game that works best for him. More of the same here. Another mandatory SMACK. +

Kid Chaos-
Kid Chaos showed us in his bout with Chess how amazing the Art of Rap can be at its core. From then in my view it was apparent the next step in his approach as a lyrical savant adjusting to environmental acumen would be to just flow. Truth is, the apex of Kid Chaos in this sport has no ceiling within his own craft. Often I attest to the sport of Battle Rap housing some of the best lyricist and penmanship the World currently provides. Kid Chaos is of that exact ilk. In being so, there will be those like myself who find the nuance within lyrical creativity awe-inspiring and thatβs who you Rap for Chaos as their are many of us. For my 2cents, the URL pitting KC into matchups that serve his approach is the only adjustment to ever make for his unique space in the sport. Ex: what made this 3 round preview between himself and Dot so commercially intriguing on the spot was the subtle expectation immediately to calibrate oneβs degree of attentiveness to hear a certain style of battle. A style made for immediate transcribing. Because the kick is, the playback for Battle artist is what became so entrancing to their brand. You have to listen. And listen again. And again. Until youβve taken what you want from it. Some more than others and this is actually where Kid Chaos can thrive as one of the consistent disruptors of the mold who forces the documentation of the sports intricate details within the margins. Chaos gets to live beyond the moment. While still enjoying the moment where the venue realized the correlation between period, dot, and battle. Makes one wonder what else they mightβve missed along the way. And from there it begins. M.I.A.

B Dot-
This bout deserves three rounds. Charles Dar-winning through the performing quality of accentuating cadence points for maximum effect showed a style matching precision that lends to style pointing a lyrically potent fight. B Dot gave Chaos a calming sense of resolution as he deconstructed the body of work tit for tat showcasing not only a consumer endorsement for a future bout between himself and Kid Chaos that could serve prominent to the Art at a later stage but hey- B Dot v. Tsu Surf= the wow factor that pops from it doesnβt have to be as one-sided as some may presume on the surface. Tsu Surf can be heard audibly co-signing the jab rapidity of Dotβs lyrical approach in this one. Makes you wonderβ¦

Twork-
Has anyone reviewed the tape yet and discovered Tworkβs body language from set go was pretty evident to the fact he was both not prepared and attempting to makeshift a round right before the coin toss as well as perhaps for the first time concerned for what it may mean to draw a blank in this very momentβ¦
Look, Mike Tyson shouldβve been the greatest boxer of all time. But he wasnβt. And at some point in his path both he and the consumer base of boxing across the board realized that after much reluctance and began the proper course of putting Mike in his most ideal context as to respect and admire who he is. Rather than what youβd like him to be. Nu Jerzey Twork has arrived at his similar fate in his respective sport. A producer of classic moments forever cemented in the historical lore of his profession as fans, media, and contemporary peers alike will always marvel the talent and tantalizing potential of what was and what couldβve been. But first one has to accept the βwhat-ifβ is in fact tethered to NJT going forward and there is no way around it. The only adjustment to be made is within the man himself alongside those, if any, appointed to aid him in his journey. Therefore him choosing to see the fork in the road and go straight is both his choice and none of the public viewerships business. For many years, the buffer between artist and consumer remained intact for reasons such as this. What Twork may need or want to do in order to experience a particular resurgence in his craft is not an open discussion for the internet. Though equipped with the one-percentile talent to be the best ever of his sport, the tall task of itβs pursuit isnβt a requirement for Twork. It is time to allow Twork to simply be himself.
Real Name Brandon-
RNB came to work lunch pail in tact and completed the objective with total professionalism considering the circumstances. Respect to him. But not just that, Real Name packed a competitive punch with intentions of winning the spar from jump, no matter the opponents output. This level of poise from the Rookie Of the Year heading into his sophomore campaign showed from Real Name Brandon as he steadied his angled approach to address conversation and subject matter relevant to his oppositional matchup specifically. βIβm really one of the bestβ. Say that. And hopefully Brandon will continue to affirm it cause the work is certainly attesting to the fact. A complete body of work here from Real Name. RNB 1-0

Charron-
Charron did what he does best and performed to the liking of his environment. Creativity and rebuttals while stretching the personals toward Danny through the technical clockwork of what he knows works best as tailored to his audience. Not unlike a Charlie Clips or Hitman Holla, to have high repetition and practice with engaging a staged crowd is to know what likely does and doesnβt land favorably. Great work by Charron. This bout will be fireworks when revisited for 3 rounds.

Danny Myers-
Is it just me or did anyone else notice Dannyβs chess play of allowing his opponent to reveal his hand and dump his approach and strategy on the table for what will almost assuredly become a 3 round bout at a later point- genius? What Danny gave and even alluded to days prior to the bout was an admission that putting feelers out to gage Charronβs intellectual prowess was a strategy Danny knew he wouldnβt resist. And while he was busy seeing what no one else saw Charron would be busy taking the bait. Gamesmanship. Because surely there is no explanation for Danny conceding the unimpeded rebuttal in a one-rounder without good reason right? Thereβs a great chance we see these two in a sanctioned bout and when we do Danny Myers will have the bird in hand ready.

Jakkboy Maine-
KING OF BANNED.
Jakk would be well within his right to go full on Surf in Banned settings. βThis is my sh*tβ so the saying goes and for Jakk in these climates it remains true. Hence even by his own admission, there was no way heβd falter or lose a spar, even to the prodigy known as Chess, while in the Banned aesthetic he calls home because he wonβt let off the gas here. So what we got was Jakk in rare form. Protect the brand King. Battle objective complete. Chess-
Chess walked in this one. I donβt know who thought what but who I thought won on points in this head up is far from the indicator of how this bout goes in 3 rounds. So saying Chess going half-speed and truly sparring as opposed to full throttle just means this showcase achieved its intentions with this matchup alone. A 3 round bout we didnβt know we needed but now- add this to the list of mandatories for Troy & Beasley to weigh. Jakk v. Chess sanctioned will be epic. Chess lost on points for my 2cents however he also pulled punches and revealed just enough without giving too much away. A great strategy I saw several fighters take assuming the teaser preview may very well become a full brawl later on.

Emerson Kennedy-
Emerson Kennedy can Rap. And has earned the room to be experimental with well, the room itself should he so choose. But the question remains for my 2cents in that identifying EKβs ceiling and floor as a performer has yet to reveal itself wholly all these years in. What should be commended on his part is the matchup versatility EK presents no doubt about it. His ability to move weight classes in tier stature and face a variety of opponents makes EK a real sight to behold when the fight excites. But like the fighter of this career course, how will you ever stack belts jumping from class to class? I wonder this for Emerson Kennedy as he explores his own depth of becoming more than a fast paced lyrical thrill utilizing the spoils of a home game and evolves into the ethos of what it is exactly he represents as a cultural archetype not unlike his out of the ring presence as an emerging creator of content. The clarity in that matching the clarity in this seems to me where EKβs next step forward takes him. Rightfully so, as his matches are for the most part always a good experience to me the viewer. I ask and put forth, what is Emersonβs peak in this sport? On this nite he once again dazzled the idea of this quandary for consideration pin-pointing T Top in spar. 10-9 EK

T Top-
Rebuttal game crazy... T Top has arrived at the fate of the sole-dimensional. True to form in exhibition T Top gave a round of general material to dust off the gloves for the new SZN. Not an issue. What could be an issue though is Top resonating. Truth is T Top has a few bouts that require attention as a means of moving forward. Fights that cannot be looked over. Subconsciously I think this fact bleeds into Topβs body of work (Roc reference) just the same as the viewership while attempting to engage all the way into Topβs topical introspection into both himself and others. This spar gave that form of energy off IMO. Ideally for 2022 the matchups that bring the objective for T Top full-circle become his focus. In this exhibition I have him out-pointing EK though the looming questions remain.
PenGod- βgetting in a fanduel is like a parlay ticketβ
Nunn Nunn-
Quiet kept Nunn Nunn out-pointed Rum Nitty in this spar. Thatβs a Big deal! I liken Nunn Nunn to a backyard scuffle fighter with professional footwork and a chin. You DO NOT just want those problems in a lyrical exchange. Rebuttal from jump and from their clean dosage. Hands distributed equally as Nunn landed far more efficiently in percentage than I think many wouldβve initially expected. Whatβs interesting is that Nunn still has so many fights on the table to take while already having demonstrated his talent and that alone should behoove the URL to make him a mainstay on cards this SZN. Look out, Nunn Nunn could soon be on the cusp of becoming that fight nobody wants to take until they have to. His exhibition with Rum showing heβll meet in the middle and let em go. Fonz?

Rum Nitty-
What planet is Nitty from? You could argue he would be ultimately outscored for the spar and I get it but that would only speak more to Nunn Nunnβs work than Rum. Cutting short a masterpiece exhibition in our first preview of 2022 Rum Nitty showed us this years Nitty is the same as, well any Rum Nitty of recent memory. Not of this World. Idk whoβs eager to get punched around the ring with Battle Rapβs Bud Crawford this SZN but whoever you are Godspeed and may you put up a good fight a la Nunn Nunn/Shawn Porter and try to go the distance. Pound for pound or bar for bar we all know Rum Nitty has a seat at the table in the discussion of whoβs the best. From the early looks of it, new year yet not much has changed for the Phoenix native. As he stands in rare territory amongst his peers as one of the toughest challenges in the sport still remains trying to win a decision over Rum Nitty. The tangible likelihood of winning the points within the margins- slim. Whoβs up for the lyrical barn-burner? Daylyt? Mannnβ¦.

Real Sikh-
Sikh was on his game here. Lyrically sharp and comfortable as he dissects his opponent, one of his greatest strengths. As we know selectively bringing the Brolic out is of note here but nonetheless Sikh looked surgical in this spar. Absolutely surgical. Mechanically sound and finding his niche footing, Sikh is steadily growing into the technician of all trades as expected. With the admission that some may have prematurely designated him to be such a tad early, who Sikh is morphing into is the dangerous he alluded to in his body of work. Truth is, before Sikh hadnβt taken the lumps required to bring necessary elements of his vast potential out. Now, heβs experienced the ring versatility of veteran opponents who win in different ways and that alone makes Sikh a fight worth consideration before agreement. Ideally Sikh took attributes from his string of recent bouts. Aveβs straight right hook style. Pat Stayβs style points. DNAβs complete skill-set. JCβs steady point count. All valuable. I look for Sikh to have a great SZN this year.

JC-
JC is deserving of a certain discourse. The consistency of his penmanship and how effectively heβs settled into his rhymeforce over the course of a decade while taking a high volume of fights is an accomplishment worthy of superlatives I do not think heβs received yet. Julian Carterβs Roberto Duran like run through his own respective sport came to mind watching the veteran MC mix it up with a fourth generation URL artist. This bout is quite obviously a 3 round mandatory candidate however if I may iβd like to propose what many probably have already- get JC the last of his signature bouts while we still have him. Itβd be a shame to see JCβs profound career come and go absent of several key bouts on the resume left untapped while he can still throw an effective combo punch sequence. Thereβs no question heβs earned it but we the consumer have also earned the βidealβ privilege to not wander too far into the what-if sector of certain overdue heavy billed matchups still left on the URL circuit considering the higher volume of output. Just a thought. Here JC methodically walked down Sikh on point tally. Per usual.
